A group of Kamenu Ward youths on Friday took to the streets of Makongeni Phase Four to clean up the area which has been having a problem with garbage disposal.
The youths under the umbrella of Kamenu School Leavers Forum joined hands together with a section of Phase Four residents and combed up the area, an activity that they will continue in the neighbouring Phase Five on Saturday.
Speaking during the clean up, the group leader Joseph Njoroge said that they were happy to be cleaning up the area as residents will now feel a difference.
"The area is now very clean and residents especially those who are out for work will definitely note a change when they come home in the evening. There is still a lot of work to be done as we have to take all this garbage to the dump site and we may be here up to 5pm," said Njoroge.
He added: "And since we cannot clear everywhere around this place, we hope that residents will feel a difference and clear the remaining parts at their own time as tomorrow we will proceed to Phase Five."
Njoroge says that the area was scattered with dangerous objects like broken bottles, glasses, sharp metallic objects to name but a few and urged residents to be responsible on how they dispose such materials for their own safety and that of their children.
One of the residents who joined in the clean up lauded the group's move saying that was an exemplary way of giving back to the society.
"I am the Nyumba Kumi Chairman here and these youths notified me four days ago about today's exercise and am very glad that they have chosen to give back to the society through cleaning of our environment. This is commendable and that is why I joined them," said Joseph Macharia.
