A youth lobby group in Nakuru has threatened to mobilise touts and other matatu crewmembers in the area to reject the new cashless transport system that the government and Matatu Owners Association (MOA) is currently implementing.
The Mawanga Youth Agenda (MYA) now plans to hold demonstrations across the county in protest over the proposed system.
According to the group´s chairman, Antony Waweru, the new system should be implemented only after the government has put in place measures to provide alternative employment to the youth whom he says will be rendered jobless once the cashless era takes root.
“We are strongly against the rushed implementation of this new order. Where does the government want these struggling youths to turn to for employment yet this is their specialisation?” said Waweru.
The group has now vowed to mobilise thousands of youth in the area to protest against the system until the government addresses them over the matter.
“The government should be made aware of the fact that thousands of touts will likely be forced into a life of crime as a way of finding alternative sources of income should they be rendered jobless,” added Waweru.
The chairman was addressing a section of touts on Wednesday at the Mawanga business centre in Nakuru town.
