A youth group that was constituted during the Kazi Kwa Vijana initiative in 2011 has made tremendous progress ever since starting trading in maize.
Speaking to HiviSasa.com on Monday, Nyagonyi youth group chairman Duke Atemba said they came up with the 20-man group after the Kazi Kwa Vijana initiative following an advice by Gesima MCA Ken Atuti.
According to him, group members are assigned deferent roles in which each member is expected to excel due to strict regulation set down the group’s constitution.
“We formed the group as casual labourers who used to repair roads and empty drainage systems in 2011. The current MCA encouraged us to form a group after helping us to organise a fundraiser. We contributed about Sh15,000 and started maize selling business,” Atemba said.
“We are organised in a manner that each of the 20 of us executes specific roles hence making it easy for business to run smoothly. Some of us go to Kilgoris to buy maize in bulky while others are in charge of the store. We also have those responsible for selling to consumers,” he added.
Atemba said the group has made profits from the business and have since managed to buy five motorbikes and are planning to purchase a pickup to transportation purposes.
“We have bought five motorbikes and employed operators who I think are doing a good job. We are looking forward to purchase a pick that we can use for transportation purposes very soon,” added Atemba.
