According to them, farming should be taken seriously by youths, since it is able to reduce overdependence on their parents.

Led by group chairman Jackson Onsongo on Tuesday at Gesieka, Chabumba Youth Group members urged local leadership to sensitize young people on how to turn idle land in the area into a productive asset.

“For a long time now, many of us have believed in white collar jobs. We think it is the only way to survival and this is not always true. As youths, we have to improvise ways of surviving without necessarily depending on our parents,” said Onsongo.

“There is a lot of idle land in many homesteads around this place and I feel something has to be done to help our colleagues. If the local leadership intervenes then we will see more youths actively involved in development,” he added.

Last year alone, they were able to make profits of up to a million shillings that enabled them to purchase seven motorbikes.

“From this napier grass, we managed to make Sh1 million and from it, we now own seven motorbikes. Of course we normally lease land from locals here but we have managed to attain some of our objectives,” added Onsongo.

He said his group was willing to increase its number from the current ten to at least 20, with the aim of reaching more youths.
