A youth group from Nyamira County has started an initiative that will see them reach several young people from the area who are addicted to drugs and alcohol.
According to pioneers of “Niko Sober” campaign, majorly from Tombe Youth group, the initiative will see them reach youths especially in institutions to rally them against drug abuse and alcohol.
Speaking on Thursday at Tombe buying center, they said drug abuse had become rampant in most institutions from that area, something that had negatively impacted on national examination performance.
“The issue of drug abuse and alcohol is becoming a menace in our institutions. This is why we want our youths especially in institutions to be sober for the sake of promoting good performance,” said Samuel Okinyi, a member.
“This does not mean that our school heads are not keen. We know that addicts do all they can despite strict rules in the institution to sneak in with those substances and that is why they need counselling,” he added.
The move was supported by Riakworo Secondary school principal Masara Ombori, who asked his colleagues to support the initiative for the good our area institutions.
“I am here in solidarity with what you are about to launch. I call upon school heads to liaise with the group so that they reach all schools in this area to spread the message because the problem is real,” said Masara.
The group is targeting at least 50 high schools and an addition of 100 primary schools from Kitutu Masaba constituency to realize their objectives.
