A youth lobby group based in Nakuru town is seeking for funds to enable them establish a community library and an information centre.
Speaking to our reporter in the group’s office at Mawanga business centre Friday morning, Antony Waweru, the Chairman of Mawanga Youth Agenda said the group had realized that there was a need for a community information centre to promote local youth’s recreation and information needs.
He observed that such incentives would keep the youth away from drugs, alcohol, crime and other unconstructive behaviours.
“We have been brooding over the idea of coming up with a community information centre for long. It is overdue and that is why we have started looking for funds to establish one,” said Waweru.
“We have already carried out a market survey and identified the source of books and other information materials. What is remaining is money to implement,” added Waweru.
He added that his group was working on a proposal that it will present to local and international youths’ development and Information stakeholders for funding and donation.
According to Waweru, the information centre will have two wings; the children’s section and collections and above 18 section and collections, and will stock novels, periodicals, textbooks and rare books targeting both groups for recreation, education and general information purposes.
The centre will also provide information consultancy services to community members. He said most parents in the area had expressed optimism in the project, as it will come in handy for their school-going children during weekends and holidays.
