Mariakani Youth Group chairman, Benson Kinyua, has written a proposal and would start submitting it to various stakeholders locally and nationally for sponsorship to initiate a voter registration awareness campaign in Nakuru County.
Some of the groups they are planning to approach include Ministry of Youths Affairs, County Government, Ministry of Devolution and several Non Governmental Organizations.
Kinyua said that voting period is nearing hence need for members of public to register early to enable them exercise their right to vote come 2017 general elections.
He notes that most people fail to take part in voting due to various reasons including lack of national identification cards, failure to register and possession of negative attitudes towards voting.
“We want to tackle some of the problems linked with failure by some people to take part in voting which is an important democratic right to any citizen of the country. We will target the whole of Nakuru County and we hope stakeholders will come up and sponsor us in this noble course,’’ said Kinyua.
Kinyua added that the drive will not be politically motivated but rather it will be part of the widely speculated civil education with neutral political grounds.
He said that the group will not seek for support from political parties or individual politicians as that would suggest that the group was carrying out a political campaign.
