Youth burn tyres in Kibera during anti-IEBC demos. [The Star]
Immediately after the Supreme Court upheld Uhuru's victory in the October 26 elections, youths from Awasi town and the surrounding villages took to the streets and started chanting "Uhuru must go."
The youth later proceeded to the Kericho-Kisumu-Eldoret junction where they lit a tyre at the centre of the junction. They also lit another tyre a few metres down the junction on the Kisumu-Kericho highway.
The youth then used big boulders to block the two highways. Some boda boda operators were spotted ferrying boulders to the junction on their motorcycles.
The two highways are normally very busy but today have been deserted. Only boda bodas private cars and matatus plying the Kisumu-Chemelil road could be seen on the road by the time of going to press.
The huge trucks and tractors that ferry sugarcane to various sugar factories and matatus ferrying passengers on the Kisii, Eldoret and Kericho routes have been withdrawn from the road.
Businessmen are however lamenting loss of business arising from the demos as they have been forced to close down their shops for fear of looting.
A trader who sought anonymity said that they have incurred huge losses since the disputed August 8 elections and hoped that the situation would return to normalcy soon so that they can resume business.
