Vyulya area youth leader Joseph Muoki, has condemned sand harvesting in the area.
Speaking on Tuesday at Vyula town during a forum with the area youth, Muoki urged National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) to step up and ban sand harvesting in River Thwake and Kwa both in Kaluu Sub-Location.
“We have complained over and over again against sand harvesting in this area but it is unfortunate that it is still going on,” said Muoki.
Muoki further said that apart from posing threat, the activity is harmful to the surrounding and poses threat.
“Sand harvesters are selfish driven people they do not think about other people,” said Muoki.
Muoki noted that sand harvesting threatens the soil responsible for holding water in the area hence water scarcity.
The youth called upon the area leaders to step up and help fight against sand harvesting in the rivers around the region.
