Youth from Rongai Sub-county have been urged to invest in beekeeping due to abundance of natural resources in the area and good prices of the honey at the market.
David Rono, the Chairman of Rongai Bee Keeping Association, said that the area is semi-arid and is endowed with abundance bees.
Speaking on Friday at Kambi Moto Trading Center when distributing 20 beehives to five groups of youth who are involved in beekeeping, Rono said that the existence of natural resources favorable to bees to thrive has opened doors to youth employment.
“Youth can take the opportunities provided by mother nature and earn a living,” said Rono.
He added that the modern technology in bee hives has made the collection of honey to tripple, making it an attractive investment.
“Bee farmers are now increasing their profit margins by up to three times due to better beehives being made,” said Rono.
Rono urged more unemployed youth to form groups and invest in the under-tapped industry.
He also urged women to join them and try their hand in the industry in a bid to generate income and support their families.
Rono further urged the county government through the Ministry of Agriculture to help the youth realize their dreams by setting up a factory to process their honey.
“Our greatest challenge in marketing has been existence of middle men who are buying our honey at a throw away price,” said Rono.
He added that the factory will enable the youth to add value to the product and fetch reasonable prices in the market.
