Kiamaina chief Peter Karuiki has urged the youth to develop their talents to improve their livelihoods by creating employment.
Speaking today at Kiamaina Slums during a showcase by the local youth, Kariuki said that talent was a source of income if utilized wisely. The chief praised youth who were nurturing their talents to generate income.
“Talent like painting has earned a living to youth and I am gratified to see our youth committing them to self-employment,” said Kariuki.
During the one day talent showcase, several youth demonstrated their talents in drawing, painting, music , bead work and weaving.
The administrator said that the level of crime in the slum would come down when more youth involve them in income-generating projects.
Seventeen year old Samuel Kamau said that he has been earning a living through drawing .
“I’ve been earning a living through drawing and selling my products to tourists and local residents,” said Kamau.
For eighteen year old Miriam Were, beadwork has earned them a fortune.
“We make bead work like necklaces and bangles with cultural outlook and sell them to tourists,” said Ms Were.
The youth urged the county government to set up a resource centre where they would nurture their talents and help more gifted youth realise their talents.
