The Iyabe Sub County Ward Administrator David Makario has urged youth in the county to join the available Polytechnics instead of being idle.
In an interview, Makario said that most youths in the county opt to drop out of school and start doing small crimes that lead to stints in jail, and that enrolling into polytechnics could be a long term solution to the problem.
“The county government has built more polytechnics with cheaper fees, and some are almost free to join. They offer the quality skills one need to be a professional in a given industry” said Makario.
He also added that this would significantly reduce the crime rate, since the youth will be equipped with the skills needed to earn their daily bread legally.
Makario’s statement come on the heels of the Education Cabinet Secretary urging of Class Eight Candidates who would not be able to join secondary schools to instead join local polytechnics. In Kenya the existing technical institutions can accommodate over 100,000 students, and the government is working towards establishing more in the counties.
