Some 31 youths were arrested and taken to the Gilgil police station under very tight security for interrogation.

After about one hour, area MP Mathenge Nderitu intervened and all the youths were released.

Speaking to the press after they were released, John Munga, the event organiser said that the youths had been invited for a one day empowerment workshop by the officials of the Nakuru County Bunge Sacco.

"The programme is under USAID and is supposed to empower the youths. I had mobilised the youths from Gilgil Constituency under the main agenda of training them on the great importance of joining Saccos. Unfortunately, someone called the police officers accusing us that we were training the youths to engage themselves in terror related activities," Munga said.

Munga criticised the police for interrupting their activity without verifying the information they were given.

Nderitu said that the police had received reports that the youths were Al Shabaab sympathisers and that is why they were arrested.

"The police were doing their job but I urge them to verify information first. They received information that a group of very suspicious youths was meeting and that is when the police arrested them," the MP said.
