More than 300 Thika residents turned up to replace their Identification Cards in Kiandutu slums on Monday morning during a free registration and replacement of IDs in the region.

The programme which is sponsored by Huduma Kenya is meant to sensitise residents on the importance of IDs in Kenya and equip them with knowledge in venturing into business by borrowing loans from various organisations.

The event which was graced by Thika town MCA Kennedy Mwangi benefited many youths who were loitering in the streets without the original ID cards that led them into trouble with the county Askaris.

Mwangi urged the youths to avail in large number to acquire the IDs which he says will help them get employed in organizations and tame unemployment and drug abuse which are on rampant.

“There is no one who can be employed in any organisation without IDs. Therefore, apply for them bearing in mind elections are around the corner,” said Mwangi.

Huduma official Jackson Chirchir told the press that the project will run in the Kiandutu slum for the next three days to ensure youth have acquired the IDs and they have reduced the hustle of acquiring new ones in their offices in Nairobi which he considered hectic.

“Many youth find it hectic to come to Nairobi to get their IDs replaced or getting the new ones, that’s why Huduma Kenya a governmental organization has decided to reduce them the worries,” said Chirchir.

He said that Huduma will be going round the country in slums areas to get the youth replace their IDs or acquire the new ones which will be processed in a minimum two weeks.
