Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago has decried the low number of youths applying for loans.

He said most of them shy away despite the funds being readily available for them.

"It is sad despite a majority of youths being unemployed it's only women who apply for the funds. Youths should take advantage of the loans offered by both County and National governments to improve their livelihoods," he said in Eldoret town, Tuesday.

"My government is giving out loans at 5 percent interest, youths should form groups for them to benefit from the funds and employ themselves," he added.

He also advised youths to apply for the 30 percent jobs and tenders given to the women, people with disability and youths offered by both the national and county governments.

"Youths need no funds to apply for government tenders since they are funded by banks in partnership with the government so that they get capital to begin their projects," he said.

"Youths should refrain from the norm of looking for white collar jobs instead apply for loans and venture into business or agriculture which has a lot of returns," noted governor Mandago.
