National Youth Service (NYS) recruitment exercise was ineffective in Machakos County, says Chief Inspector Amina Dube.
Dube who was in charge of the exercise in the county said they missed their targeted number of recruits due to very low turnouts.
She said the situation was worse in Athi River sub county on Friday where they had to request residents to aid in mobilizing youths from their houses to turn up for the recruitment exercise.
“The National Youth Service targets 45 recruits from each sub county, 30 men and 15 women. We have not gotten the numbers due to very low turnout, we are very disappointed,” Dube said.
She addressed the press during the recruitment exercise at KMC Grounds in Athi River Sub County on Friday.
She said the reasons why youths had boycotted the exercise in Machakos county were unfathomable despite the fact it was announced on all media platform alongside mobilization conducted by provincial administrators across the country.
“As a service we believe the mobilization was well done, but nothing. We have been forced to get recruits from their houses in Athi River,” she added.
However, they managed to recruit six youths from Athi River Sub County, three men and three women.
Dube said the exercise started at 8.00am and closed at 6.00pm.
She said they had concluded the five days recruitment exercise in the entire Machakos County.
“We only managed to get the targeted 45 recruits in Kangundo, Machakos town and Kathiani sub counties.
In the rest of sub counties, we got very few successful youths,” Dube said.
The other sub counties included Matungulu and Athi River.
Dube said they did not understand why the exercise failed to attract many youths from the county this year.
She said they will do a report to the Director National Youth Service on the exercise for a way forward.
“We do not have a plan B for recruiting more youths from the county to hit the 45 recruits target, we will do a report to the director National Youth Service on the exercise for a way forward,” Dube said.
