The more than 100 youths decided to carry out the environmental cleanup exercise at the Kolen – Kaptembwa route for fears of flooding.

“We decided that it was time for us to take our own initiative and we encouraged each other to unblock the sewage and drainage system,” said Peter Mungai.

Mungai noted that they planned the clean up on Wednesday evening before mobilizing the youths in the area.

Joseph Muchiri said that there have been increased cases of flooding in their houses due to the water lacking access to major outflows.

“We have been waking up to serious cases of flooding in our area and we have become victims of broken doors and washed utensils. We decided to look for an alternative leeway where the water can be transferred to,” he said.

Kaptembwa MCA Daniel Ambani blamed the blockage of the drainage to the flooding.

“Majority of the companies do not have a proper solid waste management plan and the area, with so many companies around end up dumping waste in the roads and drainage. Last month we had about fifty families displaced by the floods due to such activities. We are calling on the county government to come up with strict measures to ensure that such waste is taken proper care of,” he added.
