The youth have been warned against engaging in alcohol and drug abuse and have been urged to instead embrace positive moral values in the society.

Elizabeth Ongwae, Kisii governor's wife, observed that drugs and alcohol were threatening both education and life careers of many young people in the society.

She challenged leaders from Kisii County to team up with organisations like Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization to up the war against drug abuse to secure the future of the youth in the region.

Speaking on Sunday at Gusii Stadium during a funds drive for Kisii County Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization graced by Kisii governor James Ongwae, Mrs Ongwae said substance and drug abuse needed more attention to ensure that young people who constitute majority of the country's population are secured from the negative effects of substance abuse.

"I am calling upon the leadership of Maendeleo Ya Wanawake from this county to utilise their grassroots network to partner with other stakeholders in the fight against the menace of substance and drug abuse among our young people," she said.

She also warned the youth against engaging in irresponsible sexual behaviours, which she said would expose them to the dangers of contracting sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS.
