Surprise package Zanzibar continued their impressive run in the ongoing Cecafa senior challenge cup when they rallied from a goal down to beat Tanzania 2-1 in a thrilling derby at the Kenyatta stadium in Machakos.
A combination of luck and bravery paid off for the Islanders who found themselves trailing their mainland cousins as early as the 28th minute when Himid Mao fired a thunderbolt into the left side of the net to give Tanzania the deserved lead as the game progressed for the first half.
However,in the second half it was Zanzibar who came back a more detrtmined side and came close to levelling matters from time to time.
Zanzibar captain Mudathir Yahya missed a glorius chance to level matters when he found himself with Tanzanian goalie and was soon subbed off for the ever lively Kassim Khamis who had earlier scored off the bench in their match against Rwanda.
It did not take long for Khamis to register his name on the score sheet when he fired home a poweful shot on the 66th minute to restore parity.
The Heroes soon doubled their lead twelve minutes from time when they caught the Kilimanjaro Stars in a fierce counter attack with Ibrahim Ahmada tapping home the easiest of goals.
The win now puts Zanzibar on top of Group A with six points, hosts Kenya are closely second with four points while Tanzania has one point.Rwanda is bottom with zero points having lost their first two matches.
