The Department of Fisheries in Uasin Gishu County Thursday held a meeting with fish farmers in Ziwa ward, Soy sub-county to sensitise fish farmers on the advantages of rearing fish.
They were also sensitised on the need to form or join cooperative societies and Aquaculture Association of Kenya (AAK).
Speaking during the event, senior fisheries officer in Uasin Gishu County Cosmas Lagat said: “We are working on the establishment of fish Aquashop to facilitate easy market and also provide farmers with fish feeds and fingerlings at reasonable prices.”
Mr Lagat added that the county has been identified as one of the counties with potential of doing fish farming.
The national representative of AAK in Uasin Gishu County Ruth Maiyo urged fish farmers in the county to engage in fish farming as the county government had demonstrated full support for them.
Mrs Maiyo also asked farmers to join the cooperative and AAK in order to realise benefits of fish farming.
She noted that AAK and field officers across the county will lead farmers through various research projects on how to rear fish.
The ministry is targeting to meeting fish farmers across all the six sub-counties at the county in the course of the week.
