The United States government has funded the installation of 11 high-tech radiation portal monitors at the port of Mombasa.
The US through its Ambassador to Kenya Kyle McCarter, funded the security technology that will help the port of Mombasa in discovering tools, chemicals and materials used in manufacturing weapons including Improvised explosive device, drug trafficking and smuggling and illicit trade, that have been making their way into and outside the county through the port.
He said that provision of the security equipment at the ports is one of the US government supporting Kenya in fighting terrorism.
Kenya has for years faced with security threats from terrorism, especially the Somalia based Al-Shabaab militia that has been attacking the nation now and then.
On Wednesday, Mr McCarte handed to the port of Mombasa a modern server that is connected to the 11 radiation portal monitors he provided.
“Today, what we are seeing here at the port of Mombasa is very costly technology. However, it is not about the technology alone, but the partnership we have created with Kenya,” said McCarte as quoted by Capital News
Security agencies at the port of Mombasa were also trained on how to use the technology provided in handling and detecting illicit trade at the ports.
Ambassador to Kenya Kyle McCarter also held a meeting with Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho where they talked matters to do with infrastructural development as well security.
