Located along Nyeri-Mweiga road few kilometres from Nyeri town, the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology popularly known as DeKUT was initially a constituent college of Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology until 2012 when it was granted a charter to operate as an independent university by former president Mwai Kibaki.
Since then, the institution has grown to be among the top universities in the country.
The release of 2019 Kenya Universities and Colleges Central and Placement Service (KUCCPS) report saw the institution ranked the most preferred university in the country with 98 per cent of its declared capacity being occupied.
The university was ranked the best because of these two reasons;
Accredited engineering programs
Some of the local universities are offering engineering programs which are not recognized by the Engineering Board of Kenya (EBK). However, all the engineering programs in this university have been accredited by the EBK.
DeKUT is also among the few universities in the country accredited to offer competitive engineering courses.
Early completion of studies
According to the information posted on the university’s website, students who were selected to join the university will report on May 6, 2019, while in other public universities, first years will report in September or even January 2020. They also did early admission in 2018 and on normal occasions, these students will complete their studies earlier than their colleagues in the other universities.
