The County Government of Mombasa through the Department of Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works together with the Department of Finance and Economic Planning on Monday, February 18, launched the e-parking system.
The digital system allows motorists to (simply dial *282#) register and pay for their parking fees via their mobile phones.
The automated parking system is one among many technological innovations meant to improve service delivery, enhance the business environment and ensure Mombasa County transforms into a smart city.
So what if a motorist in the Coastal city fails to pay for the parking?
Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works County Executive Committee member Tawfiq Balala explained that if this happens, the County administration will not be clamping cars physically but virtually.
"If your car is clamped you will get an SMS alert and a yellow sticker on your windscreen," he explained.
However, when this happens, a motorist will be free to go about their business without paying the fee only that they will need to pay the clamping fee before they pay for their parking fee the next day.

"If you do not pay for 2 days then we will physically clamp you," he warned.
Important to note is that even two people can register the same car and either of them can pay through e-parking.
He said the e-parking system will not only make it easy for car owners to pay but will also ensure the integrity of the payment system.
The County Government will no longer depend on the faithfulness of the parking attendant to ensure safe transmission of payments to the County Government.
During the launch, the County Government released two customer service numbers for parking; 0734 812 008 and 0708 812 800.
