Popular politician and billionaire businessman Zedekiah Kiprop Bundotich better known as Buzeki on Saturday held a meeting with North Rift farmers and stakeholders in the Agriculture sector an attempt to bring to the end troubles of farmers.
The meeting was also meant to address the issue of subsidized fertilizers and low maize prices which has been the main challenge farmers from this region has been facing.
During the meeting, Buzeki allegedly helped the farmers by brokering a deal with the Export Trading Group (ETG) which is a private firm supplying fertilizers.
It was reported that the firm signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the farmers and will be selling a 50-kilogram bag of fertilizer at Sh3,000 contrary to the normal shillings about Sh5,000 after the government failed to provide subsidized fertilizers.
Also, the firm promised to provide a market for the farmers’ products.
Yes, Buzeki's move was timely and the best thing he could offer the farmers who have been suffering for a long time. Unfortunately, his move had political motives as he is already on the road campaigning for his 2022 gubernatorial bid.
Buzeki saw an opportunity to win himself votes from the desperate farmers whom both the county government and the National government seem to have neglected.
There is no doubt that the Chemelil sugar factory board chairman was able to convince a good number of Uasin Gishu residents that he is the best candidate to succeed Mandago.
