Siaya Senator James Orengo has asked the Judiciary to ensure that it fights to safeguard its independence.
Speaking during the burial of Court of AppealJudge Odek Otieno on Friday in Siaya County, Orengo said that it was not good for the executive arm of the government to interfere with the judiciary in any way.
He insisted that the judiciary should be allowed to operate as an independent arm.
The Senator, in a video shared on Facebook by Daily Nation, recalled how they fought for the independence of the Judiciary during the retired President Daniel Moi era.
“I want to appeal to the judiciary. There was a time when we who were in the trenches were fighting for the judiciary. I want to remember a day when we were supposed to have a meeting with the foreign secretary of the United Kingdom and we had written up a paper of demands and higher on it was a question of demand for the independence of the judiciary. When Sir Douglas Hume came to Kenya of all the people who were fighting for a change I think Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Paul Muite Raila Odinga and I were not allowed to meet the foreign secretary," Orengo said in part of the video.
"They must always remember that there are people who died on the streets to fight in order to have an independent judiciary," he added.
It is only recently that Chief Justice David Maraga was up in arms over the manner in which he was being treated by the Executive.
He vowed to snub government official functions for what he said was his office not being given the respect it deserves.
