Scores of soldiers attached to African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) are feared dead following an explosion at Afgoye town, Voice of America journalist Harun Maruf has reported.
Al-Shabaab militants have intensified their onslaught against Somalia National Army and AMISOM troops, a move that has seen dozens of soldiers dead in the past week.
"A third roadside explosion has been reported in the vicinity of Afgoye town targetted AMISOM convoy headed towards Laanta Buur on the road to Marka town, on Wednesday; several feared dead," he wrote on Twitter.
Earlier, Maruf, who wrote Inside Al-Shabaab book, said another explosion targeting military vehicle led to loss of Al-Shabaab fighters and loyal troops at K-13 camp.
"Roadside explosion hit a military vehicle at K-13 just before 4am last night. Firefight ensued between the soldiers and suspected militants, casualties have been reported - per security source," he added.
The twin explosions come barely two days after KDF Army Commander Lieutenant General Walter Raria toured several Forward Operating Bases in the war torn Somalia.
During his tour, Lt General Raria encouraged Kenyan soldiers in AMISOM to continue executing their mandate, adding that the mission is meant to safeguard territorial integrity of Kenya.
"Lt Gen Koipaton congratulated the troops for their outstanding and dedicated efforts in support of the Federal Republic of Somalia in neutralizing the threat posed by Al Shabaab terrorists; as well as defending and protecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Kenya.
"The Commander assured the troops on continuity on provision of training and logistics as they continue to execute KDF's primary role. The visit also served as a morale booster to the troops it being an indicator the KDF command appreciates their selfless efforts as they execute its mandate," read a statement by KDF on Facebook.
Last week, Al-Shabaab militants claimed responsibility in the attack near Presidential Palace that left AMISOM ally Major General Fatuma Ali dead. She was hailed as one of best soldiers in the mission to flush out the militants.
