In early May, Hivisasa highlighted the case of a 14-month-old boy with a life-threatening groin tumor. Baby Pius Mutula needed urgent corrective surgery since he was losing a lot of blood through bleeding tissues.
Baby Pius had been admitted at the Mau Narok Hospital in Nakuru where the bill had shot up to Sh300,000. Despite the high bill, the hospital could not carry out the surgery due to lack of resources. The surgery could only be performed at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret (MTRH).
His family was in and out of the hospital and had depleted all their resources in a bid to raise funds to clear the bill and cater for the surgery.
The story was published by Carson Junior, a Hivisasa writer, who heard about the case following a tip-off from a friend. The writer managed to get in touch with Pius’ mother, Purity Mutula, who gave him more details.
After the story was published, the writer shared it on several Facebook groups where opinion makers in Nakuru County are members. Fortunately, the story was picked up by former Nakuru East Town MP aspirant Caleb Kung'u.
Kang’u contacted the family using a phone number that was shared in the article. He later met the baby’s mother where he agreed to settle the bills incurred at the Mau Narok Hospital.
Kang’u also went ahead to cater for the corrective surgery at MTRH in Eldoret. By press time, baby Pius had undergone the surgery and was recuperating at the hospital, waiting to be discharged.
