Soy Member of Parliament has written to the Speaker of National Assembly seeking to introduce a bill that will see the Senate scrapped.
The bill also proposes the scrapping of the nominated Members of Parliament and Members of County Assembly (MCAs).
In a letter to Speaker Justin Muturi dated, September 17, 2018, the first-time lawmaker says the bill will help reduce the country’s ballooning wage bill.
By scraping the Senate and the nominated MPs and MCAs, Kositany says it will save the country over Sh3 billion.
“I would like to introduce a bill to amend the constitution to abolish the Senate and positions of nominated Members of Parliament and County Assemblies. Currently, these positions attract a cost in excess of Sh3 billion annually which constitutes a heavy burden to a taxpayer,” reads part of the MPs letter.
“I wish to state that the objective of the bill is to reduce the overall cost of representation of the public, reduce the public wage bill and promote the prudent use of public funds,” adds the letter.
The MP who is an ally of Deputy President William Ruto recently said the Senate has no work and should be scrapped.
This bill will likely renew the supremacy battle between Senators who are the protectors of devolved units and the Members of Parliament.
