Tourism at the Kenyan Coast has received a major boost after Qatar Airways launched direct flights from Doha to Mombasa County's Moi International Airport.
Led by Deputy Governor Dr William Kingi and CeC - Department of Trade, Tourism and Investment, Fawz Rashid, the ceremony saw several tourists from UAE arrive in Mombasa in the inaugural flight on Sunday.

Rashid said the partnership between Mombasa and Qatar Airways is meant to develop marketing campaigns that will increase and sustain passenger numbers in the carrier saying Mombasa’s tourism sector has been experiencing great success.
"While enjoying the hospitality of Mombasa we also urge our visitors to assess the investment opportunities within our borders," he said.
The CeC disclosed that Moi International Airport currently receives a total of nine charter flights every week with the carrier joining Turkish Airlines, RwandAir, Tui Fly and Ethiopian Airlines which already launched direct flights to the coastal city.

“Currently we are receiving a total of nine charter flights every week proving the confidence that tour operators have on our destination," noted the CeC.
On his part, Deputy Governor Kingi said the County Government of Mombasa remains committed to making the city a top tourist and investment destination.
Governor Ali Hassan Joho commended the launch, saying: "the flight heralds a new chapter for commerce and tourism in Mombasa and the coast region at large. It is a solid vote of confidence on Mombasa especially after the resumption of charter flights from Belgium, Netherlands and Poland. The Prospects for Mombasa are profound and we are glad to share the new-found prosperity with Qatar Airways."
