The section which is 40 percent complete is part of the 11.3 kilometre Mombasa - Mariakani Highway (A8) launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta in December last year.

Speaking when he inspected construction works at Kibarani stretch on Wednesday, CS Macharia said the road is critical for it will ease traffic flow to the Port of Mombasa, Moi International Airport as well as flow of goods destined in and out of Mombasa and inland counties.

In line with the government’s commitment to improve road infrastructure, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is implementing the Mombasa - Kwa Jomvu Road Project in the Coast Region to expand the current single 2-way roadway to a dual carriageway with 6 lanes from Mombasa to Kwa Jomvu, a section of the Mombasa - Mariakani Highway.

Dualling of the Mombasa - Kwa Jomvu section is jointly financed by the Government of Kenya and the African Development Bank (AfDB) at a cost of Ksh 6.1 billion.

Dualling of the approximately 11.3 kilometre road, will provide faster access to the Port of Mombasa and will facilitate freight transport originating or destined for Nairobi and other inland regional cities of countries in East and Central Africa, connected by the Northern Corridor.

Scope of works being undertaken include expansion of the current single carriageway to a dual carriageway with 3 lanes of either side from Mombasa to Kwa Jomvu, three grade separated intersections at Changamwe, Mikindani junction, and Kwa Jomvu.

The project will incorporate service lanes to improve accessibility to surrounding business areas and to Port related activity centres such as Container Freight Stations (CFS).
