For the last one week, there has been more political realignments, with leaders shifting camps. Specifically, a number of women leaders have from the Central Kenya ditched Deputy President's camp to back Raila Odinga.
For instance, Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Waiguru and the Murang'a woman representative Sabina Chege made surprise moves to ditch Ruto's camp after months of unwavering support.
However, issuing personal interpretation on why more leaders keep ditching Ruto ahead of 2022, political commentator cum analyst Peter Mukolwe claimed the leaders were securing their political carreers ahead of the proposed referendum, thing that will be a game changer for 2022 elective politics.
Mukolwe was speaking on Saturday night at a local FM station, Iftiin.
"It is not a surprise that more leaders are abandoning Deputy President. The head of state has already supported the proposed referendum calls, Ruto is opposing. What do you expect? The leaders have to make a choice on their future and that involves ditching Ruto," the analyst claimed.
He further added that if the referendum calls abort, those who have ditched Ruto could be the biggest losers in 2022.
"For a fact, the referendum push is the only hurdle between Ruto and Statehouse. If he succeds in opposing the calls, he will definitely succeed Uhuru, and in the cause, those who have since dumped him will be the biggest loosers ever," Mukolwe added.
What now remains is to see on whose side the proposed referendum will favour ahead of 2022.
