President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday visited the Western Kenya region, which has been experiencing political uncertainty.
Uhuru will be attending the 4th graduation of Kibabii University, which is located few kilometers from Bungoma town in Western Kenya.
"President Uhuru Kenyatta is in Bungoma County where he will preside over the 4th congregation for the conferment of degrees and award of diplomas at Kibabii University in his capacity as Chancellor of the institution," State House said.
Uhuru was accompanied by Education CS George Magoha, Devolution boss Eugene Wamalwa, Speaker Kenneth Lusaka among other local leaders.
Uhuru last visited Western Kenya during Mashujaa Day in 2018 at Bukhungu stadium. Since then, Uhuru has not toured the region which overwhelmingly backed Raila Odinga.
However, throughout this time, his deputy William Ruto has visited Western Kenya over 30 times, winning support from local leaders in the process.
Lusaka, former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale and Majority Whip Benjamin Washiali are the DP's pointsmen from the expansive region.
Earlier on Friday, State House spokesperson Kanze Dena defended the president's development record in Western Kenya.
"The President is aware of the slow progress of some of the road projects in Western Kenya and action is being taken to ensure that the roads are fast-tracked and delivered within schedule," she said.
Uhuru's trip comes at the time when Western Kenya is undergoing economic turbulence which occasioned laying off several employees of Mumias Sugar.
