Addressing journalists on Saturday, Muli said that the source of the disease should be found first.

He observed that the number of people suffering from cancer is not known.

The MP stressed that the government should focus on preventive measures other than curative.

"Everyone is calling for cancer to be declared a national disaster. It's okay but why would we jump to curative without focusing on the preventive in order to stop whatever is causing the illness?" said Muli.

He pointed out that there are goods manufactured locally and those imported from other countries should be thoroughly checked if they are fit for human consumption.

The lawmaker also decried that there are loopholes in certification and standardization of products that have seen substandard and counterfeit goods find their way into the country's market.

"According to studies, what we consume matters a lot and if goods are not properly checked before being let into the country, we may be consuming cancerous things that may harm us," Muli said.

Last week Mavoko MP Patrick  Makau and former Yatta MP Francis Mwangangi called for the government to declare Cancer a national disaster.
