A number of social media users have protested against an alleged decision by Moi University's administration to impose a fine of Sh6275 on students for the damages incurred during the demonstration that took place on Friday.
It is alleged that the administration demands each student at the university to pay the mandatory fine before resuming studies on October 22nd.
Twitter users termed the fine as extortion from students. They claimed that the Kesses-based institution was taking advantage of the demonstration to earn extra cash.
The netizens further argued that their was minimal damage of property during the day of demonstration whose budget cannot match with the high fine imposed on students.
A group of the netizens pointed out that the decision was unfair given not all students engaged in the demonstration.
According to KOT, some of the students were innocent and did not participate in the demonstration and therefore forcing them to pay the fine was an injustice.
They asked the ministry of education to urgently intervene by scrapping the fines, adding that the administration should also be summoned for explanations.
