In mid-October, Hivisasa highlighted a story from Uasin Gishu County where residents were in dire need of water. A section of Kaptuli town residents had called on the county government to sink boreholes and provide piped water to alleviate the situation.
The story, which was covered by Elvanis Rono, indicated that the locals, especially women, had to walk for more than five kilometers in search of water.
Elvanis, who is based in Eldoret town, visited the area where he interviewed the affected parties while at the same time witnessing the situation. Despite the area receiving rain during some parts of the year, locals did not have any water storage platforms.
The situation sometimes gets worse to the point of losing animals.
Five days after the story was published, Uasin Gishu County CEC in charge of Environment, Water, Natural Resources, Tourism, and Wildlife Management Mary Njogu promised to sink boreholes and provide piped water for Kaptuli residents.
The official noted that the provision of clean water was a priority of the county. Njogu added that the county would also ensure the area receives piped water.
In the wake of the CEC’s promise, Soroptomist International Organization donated seventy 10,000 liter tanks to residents of Kaptuli town. According to Sophie Koech from Soroptomist International Organization, Hivisasa played a vital role in helping the residents get tanks for storing water.
