With millions of Kenyans travelling back home to celebrate Christmas, it is a time to reflect on what transpired in 2019. 

Below are 5 deaths that left Kenyans in shock in 2019

1.  Bob Collymore

The former Safaricom CEO died on Jul 1, 2019. His death left Kenyans in shock. 

Collymore's last moments showed that death was beckoning after he met his friends and told them about his battle with cancer. 

Leaders from all over the world mourned his death. 

"It is with deep sadness that I have this morning received news of the death of Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore after years of battling cancer. As a country, we've lost a distinguished corporate leader whose contribution to our national wellbeing will be missed," President Uhuru Kenyatta said as quoted by the Star.

2. Joyce Laboso

Dr Joyce Laboso died on July 29, 2019. Laboso, then the Bomet Governor had a long battle with cancer.  She died at the age of 54. Her deputy Hillary Barchok succeeded her after death. 

3. Kibra MP Ken Okoth

July was a tough month for Kenyans. On July 26, 2019, Kibra Member of Parliament, Ken Okoth was pronounced dead. 

Okoth died after battling with cancer. Following his death, Kenyans called for the declaration of cancer as a national disaster.

4. Murder of Moi University student Ivy Wangechi 

On Apr 11, 2019, the nation woke up to the sad news of the death of Moi University 6th year medical student Ivy Wangeci

The student was reportedly murdered by her lover Naftali Kinuthia. The death left many Kenyans in deep shock after it emerged that the suspect travelled all the way from Thika to Eldoret to execute his mission. 

Eldoret East DCI chief Ali Kingi said that the suspect claimed he took her life after rejection. 

"He claimed he invested a lot in the girl but that she did not reciprocate his kindness and financial support," Ali said as quoted by Nation.

5. Mastermind CEO 

The death of Mastermind Tobacco tycoon Wilfred M’iti Murungi did not get the attention of Kenyans until the burial day. 

The family prevented the villagers from attending the event as he was buried in secrecy.
