Despite being in opposing camps for the last seven years, the late Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso was not filmed anywhere hurling insults at Raila Odinga, the opposition leader.

Known as a man who doesn't keep grudges, Mr Odinga has shaped political successes of many politicians, some who have turned against him in one way or the other.

The first time many Kenyans knew about Laboso's cancer condition, it was through a widely circulated photo of her and Mr Odinga in a London hospital.

On Monday, a tearful Odinga visited Lee Funeral home where he viewed the body. According to him, he's one of few leaders who visited one of the first female governors in Kenya, days to her death.

"When I visited her (Joyce Laboso) 10 days ago in Nairobi Hospital where she was admitted in the ICU, she couldn’t recognise me well. She had completely changed and was in deep pain," said Odinga.

But Joyce's political journey can be traced to 2008, when her sister Lorna, the then Sotik constituency MP, died in a plane crash in Narok County.

According to Raila's spokesman Dennis Onyango, the ODM leader had much trust in Dr Laboso, and did not hesitate to sponsor her to replace the sister.

"When we sought Sotik Parliamentary Seat, we had the faith Dr. Joyce Cherono Laboso could deliver it to us despite the odds of gender and tribe against her," said Onyango.

It took Dr Laboso several days to join URP,  the party led by DP William Ruto, who had cut ties with Raila. And even as she switched parties, she never at any point scold Mr Odinga.

In 2019 at a function in Budalang'i, one of her last public events, unlike her compatriots from Rift Valley, Dr Laboso openly supported the peace deal between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.

This Friday, Mr Odinga, President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP William Ruto, are all set to share a platform at Bomet Green Stadium where a large funeral mass will be conducted.

In 2017 gubernatorial polls, Raila who supported Isaac Ruto, is not also on record for going ballistic against Dr Laboso, the Jubilee candidates in the race.
