Addressing the press on Thursday evening, Muiruri stated that the officers were going on with their activities and didn't rob anything or anyone.

He confirmed that the five were released immediately and given their money back.

However, the police boss urged residents who may have been robbed to report to the Machakos police station OCS.

"We have released them together with their money. We have confirmed that they didn't rob anyone, they were just people going on with their business," said Muiruri.

The five officers were nabbed on Wednesday for allegedly stealing Sh268,000 from a KCB ATM in Machakos town. This is after a security guard raised alarm and the police responded.

Sh100,000 were found from a Toyota Noah's dashboard which they were using while the rest of the cash was found stashed in socks of one of the arrested officers.

Prison berets were also recovered from the five.

The police officers, Boniface Wambua, Richard Wambua, Julius Mwalili, Cyprian Odundo and Musyoki Mutua from different stations were locked at Machakos police station before being released.
