Traffic police have seized 6 Modern Coast buses that were on transit leaving at least 400 passengers stranded.
The buses were intercepted at Voi and Mariakani areas on Tuesday night as they were heading to Nairobi and Kisumu.
According to Voi Traffic Base Commander, Michael Maina, the buses were seized since National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) had not cleared them to resume operations.
He noted that the drivers were ordered to end their journey and drive back to Mombasa Station.
"We ordered the four buses that had reached Voi from Mombasa to discontinue with their journey and ordered the drivers to drive back to Mombasa Station. At least 200 passengers were affected by the move," Maina noted as quoted by K24.
The other two buses that had reached Mariakani were also intercepted and drivers ordered to drive back to Mombasa.
Modern Coast Company had on Tuesday morning claimed that NTSA had given them a green light to resume its operations after its drivers and buses passed the inspection test.
However, NTSA denied the claims saying it was yet to grant the company back its revoked licence.
The operating licence of Modern Coast Bus Express was suspended after two of its buses collided in Kiongwani near Salama Market on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, killing seven people.
Director-General of NTSA George Njao last week noted that buses operated by the firm would remain grounded indefinitely, with the agency advising police to impound any of the vehicles found operating contrary to the suspension.
"Following the early Thursday morning crash involving two of their buses, the authority has with immediate effect suspended the company's operator's licence and initiated a thorough investigation into its safety standards and operations,” noted Njao as quoted by Business Daily.
