Renowned TV social and political commentator David Osiany has mocked members of the Kenya Navy for rehearsing for the upcoming Mashujaa Day celebrations in the wake of the Likoni ferry tragedy.
Speaking in a wide-ranging panel discussion on Friday, Osiany found it odd that the officers were preparing to show the President how they are well-equipped to protect the country yet they could not respond in good time to save Mariam Kighendi and her daughter Amanda Mutheu, the victims of the Likoni incident.
"The Kenya Navy that was preparing just about 200 metres from the scene and now on 20th will have to show the president how they can protect us from external attacks under water," Osiani said in a YouTube video shared by KTN News. (7:55-8:13)
The analyst's blistering criticism of the Kenya Navy is consistent with the criticism from a section of Kenyans who wondered why the Navy was not called immediately when the car rolled off the ferry ramp.
A few days ago, Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja expressed shock that the Navy was rehearsing metres away from the Likoni tragedy scene for the Mashujaa Day.
The two victims lost their lives on Sunday evening at the Likoni Channel.
Efforts to retrieve their bodies have not yielded any fruits.
