David Mutwiwa, a Machakos-based KWS officer told Hivisasa on phone that after receiving reports of the animal attacking and killing a resident, they swung into action.

He said that KWS is doing all it can to solve the human-wildlife conflict in the areas surrounding River Athi.

Mutwiwa rubbished claims that the hippo was killed by residents.

"A hippo cannot be killed using arrows and spears due to its hard skin, I want to confirm to you that it's us who undertook the action. The residents only came to slaughter it," said Mutwiwa.

Katangi MCA Nicholas Muia said that KWS ought to have swung into action and tamed the hippo before the conflict heightened.

He said that he will follow up and ensure the family of the 36-year-old woman killed last week is compensated.

"I will make a follow up with KWS to ensure the family gets the justice they deserve," said Muia.

The woman was attacked by the hippo while heading home from the river at around 9 pm.

Her mutilated body was discovered the following day by residents.
