The home of Deputy President William Ruto at Sugoi in Uasin Gishu County was filled with visitors as he welcomed Kikuyu leaders on Thursday.
Sources from the meeting who spoke to Nation, indicated that the DP preached peace as he told the attendees to focus on uniting the country and stop politicking about 2022 polls.
“He (the DP) was concerned, especially about the ongoing debate on the BBI and told us to speak with one voice. He also urged us to sell his political agenda in the region,” an MP who attended the meeting told the Nation.
The Kikuyu leaders had met with their Kalenjin counterparts outside Silverline Hotel in Eldoret and they shared sour milk popularly known as Mursik as a sign their unity.
The Kikuyu leaders were led by Bahati MP Kimani Ngujiri who urged the Rift Valley people to support the DP as he pointed fingers at Mt Kenya leaders who are determined to paralyze Ruto's presidential bid.
“We, as Kikuyu leaders in the Rift Valley, better understand the problems we’ve undergone every election year and we can make our own decisions without pressure from any quarters. Our people should never turn against each other again,” said Mr Ngunjiri.
He asked President Kenyatta to declare his stand ahead of the 2022 polls.
Also present was Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi who recalled the promise made by Uhuru Kenyatta during the 2013 polls to rally behind the DP.
He also dismissed the handshake between Raila and President Uhuru saying that it will only benefit the two and not Kenyans.
“The only handshake we recognise is the one between President Kenyatta and the DP. If, indeed, the Raila-Uhuru handshake was genuine, why were the other principals, including Kalonzo Musyoka and Musalia Mudavadi, left out?” Mr Sudi asked.
This was the first time the DP was hosting the Kikuyu leaders at his rural home.
