Kandara Member of Parliament Alice Wahome has called for a shorter route to compensation of government torture victims.
The lawmaker says that there is a need to shorten the process of seeking justice for such people, rather than long court battles with the government as is the case currently.
She wants the establishment of a policy to facilitate compensation of government torture victims, as well as a government kitty to facilitate such payments.
“Instead of letting these people engage the government through the courts there should be an alternative way to settle the matter,” Alice Wahome told the People Daily on Wednesday.
According to the firebrand legislator, most torture victims have ended up losing all their properties in such campaigns and ended up poor and should have their cases addressed quickly.
She gave the example of former political detainee Charles Rubia, who was tortured by former President Daniel Moi's government during the push for the second liberation and died before receiving his compensation.
Rubia was buried in Kandara constituency on Monday.
By the time of his death, the judiciary was to conclude on his case where he sought an Sh40 million compensation.
