For about two years, Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has been supporting celebrated Kenyan boxer Conjestina Achieng. Sonko has been in charge of Conjestina's rehabilitation fees and monthly upkeep.
However, Sonko's initiative has been questioned by several quarters. On July 10th, Hivisasa covered a story where legendary footballer Boniface Ambani accused Sonko of abandoning Conjestina.
In the story, Ambani claimed that Sonko had been using Conjestina’s situation for Public Relation purposes. The story was covered by Asibabi Vincent, a Hivisasa gold writer based in Nairobi.
After the story was published, it was shared on several social media platforms where it was picked up by Sonko in less than 24 hours.
Sonko went on Facebook live, where he opened the Hivisasa articles and read it out to his followers.
The county boss used the session to state that Conjestina was doing well. While reacting to the story, Sonko clarified that Conjestina was still recovering at a rehabilitation center.
The governor noted that he does not engage in PR stunts in regards to helping citizens. He told off Ambani for spreading what he termed as rumors.
After clarifying about Conjestina’s condition, Sonko took the veteran boxer on a shopping spree in Mombasa. Conjestina, clad in a Kenya-team sweat top, looked to be in high spirits as well as healthier.
