Controversial Kenyan singer Willy Paul has overtaken sensational boy band, Sauti Sol, to become the leading Kenyan artiste with the highest number of Subscribers on YouTube.
Willy Paul who has been keeping a close interval with the four man band is currently standing at 326,068 subscribers. Sauti Sol, on the other hand, have 325,864 subscribers.
The battle for the top spot on YouTube has always been between Willy Paul and Sauti Sol as the third Kenyan artiste with the highest number of subscribers, Otile Brown, currently stands at 264,740 subscribers.
His achievement in emerging top can be credited to his marketing and songwriting technique. Although he has been heavily criticised for his songwriting skills, Willy Paul has stuck to his style of music which at the end of the day attracts a huge audience.
His recent song 'Lamba Nyonyo' for instance, is trending at number one YouTube despite being heavily criticised. Willy Paul is also known for staging publicity stunts as a way of marketing his songs.
Sauti Sol, on the other hand, has reduced the rate at which they produce songs. This year, they only released one song 'Extravaganza' which was aimed at promoting upcoming artistes.
They have switched their focus to their recently established Sol Generation record label.
YouTube is one of the major sources of income for musicians and as such, having many subscribers positively impacts a musicians income.
