Senate Majority leader Kipchumba Murkomen has said that he has received 15 signatures required to convene a special sitting to debate the impeachment of embattled Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu.
The special sitting will be held on January 21.
Addressing the press on Monday in Nairobi, Murkomen said they made a decision to expedite hearing of the impeachment as soon as the holidays elapsed.
“Since we were on recess we agreed that we will revisit as soon as we finish the holiday…I have received 15 signatures required to convene a special sitting,” he said.
“The House has been notified that we shall have a special sitting on 21st this month to consider the impeachment of the Kiambu Governor," Murkomen added.
Murkomen also indicated that a ruling is pending on whether to formulate a special committee or incorporate the full house in hearing the case against Waititu.
Waititu was on December 19, 2019, ousted after 63 Members of Kiambu County Assembly voted for his ouster over a litany of claims including mismanagement of the county's resources and abuse of office.
Waititu, together with his wife Susan Ndung'u and several county staff are facing Sh588 million graft case. He has been operating from out of the office following ordered by the court barring him from accessing his Kiambu office.
