The burial date for the late court of appeal Judge James Odek has been set. Justice Odek will be buried on Friday, December 27, 2019, in Asembo, Siaya County.
Before that, there will be a public viewing of the body at the Kisumu Law Courts on Thursday.
This was revealed by the late Judge’s brother Yonah Odek, who spoke shortly after the Government Chief Pathologist Johansen Oduor revealed what caused Odek’s death.
After conducting an autopsy at Aga Khan Hospital - Kisumu, Dr Oduor revealed that Odek died as a result of a clot on the vein of the right leg.
“The clot chocked the heart. The cause of death is pulmonary thromboembolism,” Dr Oduor said.
“But for Justice Odek, I think blood became static because of prolonged sitting. Being a Judge, his work involves a lot of sitting. It is a risk factor,” Oduor added.
A senior officer at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) told Capital, that they are still analysing Justice Odek's phone calls.
“We have forwarded all the evidence and exhibit we gathered at the house to the Government Chemists in Nairobi,” the DCI officer said.
Justice Odek's brother, Yonah Odek said, “we will discuss the report as a family after receiving it officially.”
Odek’s body was discovered at his apartment in Milimani Estate, Kisumu on December 16, 2019. Police are still investigating the circumstances which led to his death.
He was sworn in as Court of Appeal Judge in 2012, one year after he unsuccessfully applied for the position of Supreme Court Judge. He was born in 1963 in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, ODM party leader Raila Odinga and Chief Justice David Maraga are among the leaders who have sent messages of condolences following Odek’s death.
