The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has postponed party nominations exercise in Kibra Constituency scheduled for Saturday, August 31, 2019.
The much anticipated primaries will now be held on Saturday, September 7, according to National Elections Board (NEB) chairperson Judith Paremo.
In a statement on Wednesday evening, Paremo said the party postponed the exercise due to lack of provision of security personnel by the government.
"This has been occasioned by lack of provision of Security by the National Police Service citing commitment to the ongoing national census exercise," she said.
"In view of the above reason, the National Elections Board has notified the Independent Boundaries and Electoral Commission (IEBC) of the arising issues and the decision. The NEB urges all the cleared aspirants to continue with their peaceful campaigns in preparation for the exercise," Paremo added.
The announcement came barely hours after party Secretary General Edwin Sifuna said they have approved only 11 of the 24 hopefuls who had applied to be included in the party nominations.
Speaking during an interview on Radio Citizen on Wednesday morning, Sifuna said they locked out the other 13 hopefuls after they failed to pay mandatory Sh250,000 nomination fee.
"11 people have paid up and are the same ones whose names will be printed in the ballot papers (Wale ambao wamelipa ni watu kumi na moja na hao ndio tutachapisha majina yao katika makaratasi)," the Secretary-General said.
