According to the school principal, Oroni Omwoyo, his institution had not received sufficient funds to cater to the construction of new toilets. Hivisasa Kisii based writer Geoff Gichana covered the story where he interviewed the principal.

The principal called on area MP, Richard Onyonka to support the school through the Constituency Development Fund. The principal claimed that the school was underfunded.

After Hivisasa published the story, the writer shared it with the MP through a WhatsApp group.

The MP immediately reacted by stating that the school, had been allocated Sh1 million that was to cater for the construction of facilities like toilets.  The MP noted that the school had received the same amounts as other institutions in its category. He claimed that Nyatieko Secondary School principal has mismanagement the funds allocated.

The MP challenged parents to call for accountability from the school. Onyonka stated that the Sh1 million allocated was meant to construct a laboratory and toilets.

However, the principal noted that the money had been channeled towards the construction of the laboratory alone.

Following the MPs plea, the Parents Teachers Associations of Nyatieko mixed secondary school commenced investigations into the alleged misuse of funds.

According to the PTA chairperson Elkana Obonyo, the principal had commissioned unauthorized projects like the laboratory. Gichana interviewed Obonyo who stated that vital documents supporting the construction project were unavailable.

The principal later admitted that there was overspending of money, terming the contractor as incompetent. The principal further confirmed that the contractor had laid the foundation of the laboratory twice. The two foundations were later discovered to have faults leading to demolition.

Consequently, no money was left for the construction of toilets.  The parents are now calling the ministry of education to take action against the school.
