Reports that Kenya was denied a loan to extend Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) beyond Naivasha are fake, Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma has said.
Through her official Twitter handle, Juma said the claims are baseless and misleading.
She warned media houses against misleading headlines insisting that the relationship between Kenya and China is beyond the project.
The CS's remarks came after reports went around that President Uhuru Kenyatta and African Union Special envoy Raila Amolo Odinga were denied the loan.
“Strange headlines out of Nairobi today! The relationship between Kenya and China is broader than the SGR. In fact, the SGR extension beyond Naivasha was never a priority agenda for the current mission to Beijing," CS Juma tweeted.
She also said that the two governments are focused on building their ties for the betterment of the lives of their citizens.
“Our focus was on growing market access, development of our industrial and special economic zones, and partnership with the private sectors for investment,” she said.
The issue of China extending loans to Kenya continues to elicit mixed reactions.
Leaders from different quarters have varied opinions over the same.
Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua has backed Uhuru on the loans but asked him to ensure that the money is used accountably.
